The colonial architecture of this large stately baroque mansion on La Merced Street boasts a façade of false Doric columns and flowers and a large iron-railed balcony. It was built in the 17th century but went through reconstructions after 3 earthquakes. Under its soaring roofs, there´s a white sillar stone staircase in the form of a snail shell and an interior main patio with a black stone fountain. These days the property houses paintings and sculptures of the Cusco and Granada School.

Arequipa offers various possibilities for whitewater rafting. Experiences rafters can tackle the advances rapids of Colca Canyon, home of the endangered Andean Condors, and Cotahuasi, the world's deepest canyon. Cotahuasi is isolated from settlements- it's a day´s hike to arrive and you need to camp; it possesses 120km of Class IV-V rapids that take about 6 days to conquer. Less advanced rafters can enjoy the stunning views of the valley surrounding the Majes River, with smaller rapids.

Arequipa boasts 3 volcanoes: the conical El Misti (The Gentleman), considered a symbol of the culture and city of Arequipa, Chachani (the Beloved) and Picchu Picchu (Top Top). Climbing Misti, where an expedition found 6 Incan mummies in 1998, wins you incredible views of the surrounding landscape, the White City of Arequipa, and the volcano's crater. Or, grab an ice ax and scale the three snowy peaks of Chachani. Those who'd like a more extreme adventure can bike downhill along their slopes.

The historical center of Arequipa, known as the White City due to its famous buildings of pearl-like sillar rock from the city's surrounding volcanoes, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The architecture of its colonial monuments integrates European and native building techniques and ornamentation in a style that has come to be known as mestizo-baroque. Make sure to stop by and witness how light plays off the intricately carved façades with European and pre-Columbian designs.
