Grab an ice axe and tackle the three snowy peaks Chachani Volcano with us! From the summit, you’ll not only savor a sense of accomplishment, but also will wnjoy panoramic views of the White City of Arequipa, its countryside, and the surrounding volcanoes and snow-covered peaks.
We’ll pick you up in Arequipa at 8:30am and we'll depart in our 4x4 vehicle on our way to the volcano and we will start trekking at 5,000m, which should take about 2½ hours to finally climb 300m to the site where we'll set up our base camp. We´ll explore around the base camp on this day to acclimatize and then we will rest to be prepared for the next day.
After a very early hot breakfast at 2:30am, we’ll leave the equipment at base camp and begin the 6 to 9 hours ascent with just our backpacks. Chachani’s ice caps are not permanent and are diminishing, so whether we need the crampons and ice axe or not, will depend on the month that we take this adventure.
We’ll arrive at snowy Angel Peak (5,825m) first, from where we'll have a great view of the city of Arequipa. From there, we’ll zigzag a snowy stretch along the south face of Fatima to its peak (5900m). Here, our ultimate goal will come into view: the summit of Chachani (6080m).
The descent to base camp should only take 2 to 3 hours, and after packing up our camp, we´ll head down to where our transport will be waiting to take us back to the city of Arequipa. We’ll arrive in the city at approximately 2:00-3:00pm.
