Itinerary of Ecoaventuras Tambopata

Day 1 - Puerto Maldonado - Jungle Walks

To begin the tour, we’ll meet you at Puerto Maldonado’s bus station or airport (or at another agreed-upon point, depending on your preference) and then head upriver along the Madre de Dios River to our own lodge, Ecoaventuras Amazónicas.

Our lodge, Ecoaventuras Amazónicas, offers bungalow lodging based on double and triple rooms. The aim is to provide comfortable accomodations in harmony with the surrounding environment. Upon our arrival, there’ll be a brief introductory talk about our work with the Cachuela community in a unique ecotourism project, as well as the general overview of the lodge and its trails.

There, we’ll enjoy a delicious local lunch before going for a walk along the area trails, in order to learn about the medicinal plants which Amazonian populations have been using for centuries.

We’ll go for an entirely different walk once the sun begins to set, as the jungle transforms dramatically in the night. This will allow us to experience the sights and sounds of the nocturnal Amazon, from noisy insects and owls to the world’s only nocturnal monkey, the musmuqui (Peruvian Red-necked Owl Monkey).

We’ll have dinner at the lodge and spend the night in bungalows.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 - Lake Sandoval

After a very early breakfast, we’ll depart by motorboat upriver (in the direction of Puerto Maldonado) to Tambopata Reserve. After a walk of about an hour, we’ll arrive at Lake Sandoval, where we’ll see cacophonous giant otters and peculiar hoatzin birds, which are locally known as Shanshos and some duck snakes known as Anhgingas. We’ll also be able to spot rare monkey species such as howler, capuchin, spider, and tamarin monkeys. We’ll explore our surroundings by rowboat, including a stunning waterfall. We’ll arrive at the time of peak animal activity, although this wanes nearing midday. Thus, we’ll rest on the shore at this time, while enjoying a fancy tropical boxed lunch.

After lunch, we can refresh ourselves in the lake before beginning our return trip to the lodge.

We’ll have dinner at the lodge and spend the night in bungalows.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 - Parrot Clay Lick - Recreational Fishing - Bonfire

Early breakfast since our trip starts at 4:15am in order to visit the Parrot Clay Lick along the riverside. At this early hour, when the rainforest begins to wake, the trip itself is quite magical. These are walls along which hundreds of parrots and macaws (up to 7 different species) gather to feed upon the clay, which contains minerals that allow the birds to detoxify from any unripe fruit or seed that they’ve eaten. They also socialize and find mates at these sites. One can only witness this colorful spectacle in the first hours of the morning. The trip will last approximately 2 hours.

After lunch back at the lodge, we’ll enjoy some recreational fishing in the Madre de Dios River (although only if it is during the summer or dry season). This is one of the Amazon’s main activities, and you’ll see many people fishing along the river with lines as well as nets. We’ll have the option to visit a local family to learn about local life.

Over an evening bonfire after dinner, we’ll share some anecdotes and legends about the Amazon.

Lodging in bungalows at Ecoadventuras Amazónicas.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 - Zip Line - Canopy - Puerto Maldonado

On your final day in the Peruvian Amazon, we’ll tackle almost 600ft of Zip Line! This exciting activity will make you feel like a bird swooping through the Amazon’s canopy. Amidst the zip lines, we’ll also take a high-altitude walk along a hanging bridge, which will allow you to observe species that reside in the high treetops of the rainforest, such as toucans and geckos, which you could never see or hear walking along the tree trunks.

We’ll have breakfast at the lodge before departing for Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or airport, in time to catch your flight to Lima or Cusco.
