Travel by train to the most famous archeological center of the Incas, which has been captivating the world since its rediscovery in 1911, Machu Picchu Citadel. The ancient and remote Lost City of the Incas is dramatically perched high in the Peruvian Andes over the Urubamba, a work of beauty and harmony in balance with its strikingly beautiful natural surroundings.
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 6:30 and 7:00am and head to the station to board the Expedition train to the small and vibrant town of Machu Picchu Pueblo (colloquially known as Aguas Calientes).
Along the way, we'll pass throught stunning views of fertile river valleys and snow-capped mountains with Incan agricultural terraces along their slopes. We'll follow the sacred Vilcanota River up into sub-tropical jungle brow. Disembarking at the final stop, Aguas Calientes, we will met our guide and board a bus for the final 25 minutes of the trip to Machu Picchu Sanctuary, with its impressive array of wild orchids and butterflies and the Lost City of the Incas, hidden for centuries under the lush jungle foliage high in the Peruvian Andes.
The guide will lead the group on a 2 hour tour of this mysterious citadel from the time of the 9th Inca, Pacacutec Inca Yupanqui, highlighting its most impressive areas while explaining what is known of their significance and history. Some of the sights you'll see include the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana solar clock, and the House of the Chosen Women.
After the guided tour we'll have some free time to explore the archeological site independently and take your photos. The bus ticket back down to Aguas Calientes is included, and you'll have time for lunch (on your own) before catching the return train back to Poroy Station in Cusco or Ollantaytambo Station in the Sacred Valley, from where we'll continue by private bus to Cusco.
The tour ends in Plaza Regocijo, a block from Cusco's main square, the Plaza de Armas, at 9:55pm.
