The Majes River Valley is an attractive fertile oasis of straw and adobe homes, rice paddies, vineyards, and orchards tucked away in the middle of the coastal desert between the Pacific Ocean and Andean foothills. The area is well-known for its freshwater shrimp, Piscos, dinosaur tracks, and a reputation for witchcraft localized in village of Huancarqui; here people accept food and drink with the left hand to avoid curses, and the love-sick flock to ask for spells and curses.

This traditional neighborhood of narrow streets, gardens, and colonial homes of volcanic rock not only has plaza boasting 18th century churches with some of the region's best mestizo art, but also has a look-out made famous by postcards. The look-out is covered by a series of white sillar arches from the 19th century which have been engraved with words from Arequipeño writers. From here you´ll get a bird´s eye view of the Chili River Valley, the city, and the three volcanoes.

For those looking to relax between treks, Sabandia's idyllic pastoral scenes are the perfect cure. Here you'll see the stately 400 year old Sabandia Stone Mill and the picturesque waterfall which provides its power source. The mill is still in use after all this time, so you can learn about the traditional method of grinding grains. You can go horseback riding in the green countryside surrounding the mill, where you'll see alpacas and vicuñas grazing, Inca terraces, and natural springs.

This geological wonder descends 3,535m, making it the world's deepest canyon. It was home to the Wari Culture before their conquest by the Incas, who used the land to shorten the salt route between Cusco and the coast. In the canyon you´ll see pre-Incan Andean terraces and Inca trails still in use, waterfalls and natural hot springs, petrified forests, cactus and puya forests, enigmatic petroglyphs, and the diverse flora and fauna that characterize the "The Canyon of Wonder´s" 12 ecosystems.
