In metropolitan Lima, an hour by car from San Isidro/Miraflores, is the immense religious center of Pachacamac (200AD), the most renowned coastal pre-Inca and Inca pilgrimage site. Perched on a desert bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Andean foothills, it was home to the central coast's preeminent Inca oracle. Excavations of the site, whose adobe structures cover several square miles, are still ongoing. View artifacts unearthed over almost a century of excavations in its onsite museum.

This museum in the Barranco suburb of Lima comprises 2 mansions collectively known as Osma Palace built in 1906. Owner and art collector Don Pedro de Osma Gildemeister converted his home into galleries where he personally guided visiting dignitaries through priceless works. The museum displays colonial paintings, sculptures, metalwork, stonework, and furniture from cultural centers such as Cusco, Arequipa, and Ayacucho, and at the restoration shop you can watch conservation techniques in action.

Located in Miraflores, the small Museo Amana, open by appointment, houses the private collection of Mr. Yoshitaro Amano. The collection is a stunning display of ceramics and textiles, illustrating the advances from one culture to the next. Although there are a range of Pre-Columbian cultures represented, the Museo Amano is best known for its remarkable collection of textiles from the Chancay culture, a lesser- known culture from the northern coast consequently not seen as much in other museums.

In Bolivar Plaza in central Lima you'll find the popular Inquisition museum in a mansion whose basement dungeons were used by the Spanish Inquisition from the 16th through early 19th centuries before it become the Senate building. Tour exhibits exploring the Inquisition's history and impact and view the torture chambers and some of the instruments used on heretics in the subterranean torture chambers. There's a life- size wax exhibit in the basement demonstrating the interrogative methods used.
